AAUW recognizes Hometown Heroines:Cathcart, McNeal honored for contributions

AAUW president Virginia Ayers presented the prestigious awards to Carole Cathcart and Nancy McNeal.
“We are so delighted to recognize these two very active ladies. They both work diligently for Relay for Life, which is such a success and a good cause.” said Ayers.
Cathcart has been a Warren County educator for 26 years, having been a third-grader teacher at Bobby Ray Memorial for the past 10 years.
During the summer of 2002 she attended an American Cancer Society meeting and saw the need to bring Relay for Life to Warren County. As a result of the meeting, she became a lightning rod for our community to come together and take part in the fight against cancer. She has CO-chaired this major event the past three years.
“Warren County always stands ready to meet challenges,” said Cathcart. “That first year I led a ‘dream team’ with my heart. I simply could not have done this without the help of a lot of dedicated individuals, who, like myself, want to see cancer eliminated.”
As a result of Relay for Life Warren County has raised a total of $168,000 for the American Cancer Society’s signature event. Cathcart never misses an opportunity to extend a warm invitation to all to attend the event. This year’s event takes place at the Warren County Middle School track June 3, with opening ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m.
Cathcart and her husband, Tom have two sons, Curt and Brian and attend Westwood Church of Christ.
Nancy McNeal is also a teacher, having taught high school science for more than 25 years. This fall, she will begin a new chapter in her career, serving as a full-time teacher of English as a second language.
McNeal is currently serving as the team captain of Alpha Delta Kappa’s Relay for Life team, which has raised over $3,500 so far with pre-event sales of jewelry and awareness wristbands. She is as passionate about cancer research and the services that the American Cancer Society provides for people who are undergoing treatment because of the experiences of her family and friends who have fought and are fighting this disease.
She is married to Wayne McNeal and have three children, Joanna, Carson and Connor. The family attends Westwood Church of Christ.
The American Association of University Women’s outstanding member of the year honors were bestowed on Angela Brock.
“She is certainly an outstanding member of our organization,” says Ayers. “She attends every meeting and is always ready to do anything that is needed.”
AAUW officers are, Ayers, president; Tena Self, first vice-president; Joyce Britton, second vice-president; Shirley Douglass, treasurer; Loyce McGregor, corresponding secretary and Connie Bell, recording secretary.
