Students can take college-level course at WCHS

Beginning with the 2005-06 school year, Motlow is offering a college-level English course that’s available for seniors on the WCHS campus.
Students will receive dual credit for the course, meaning it counts toward their high school requirements while also giving them college credit. Around 50 students have registered.
“It’s a great chance for students to get a jump on their college careers,” said Melody Edmonds, director of McMinnville’s Motlow College. “This not only encourages them to go to Motlow, but to go to college in general because they’re familiar with the course work. They get a taste of what college is like.”
Edmonds said the credit will transfer to most schools in the state, even private schools. She indicated this is a program Motlow already has in place in other areas and it’s being offered to local students for the first time.
High school students won’t have to travel across town. A Motlow professor will teach the class on the high school campus.
“We’re going to start with English,” said Bobby Cox, the school system’s director of instruction. “And we’re hoping to expand it to include math, science and other courses later on.”
The college-level course won’t be used when calculating a student’s GPA. That means it also won’t have an influence on class rank.
It hasn’t been determined which Motlow professor will teach the English class. It will be that person, not high school officials, in charge of establishing the course curriculum.
