Smith regime begins for WCHS hoops:New staff holds tryouts for varsity, freshmen

Both the varsity and freshman teams hit the hardwood for the two-day session, with the freshmen trying out in the mornings and varsity coming in after the freshman group was finished. Each group went through a series of skills tests to help determine their quickness and agility.
“Our varsity tryouts went very well,” Smith said. “I had the chance to see Warren County play on several occasions last year, so I knew who would be back and what kind of potential this team had.
“We kept 19 players, and I feel after being with them for two days they are eager to learn.”
The Pioneer basketball teams will have a busy June, with two weeks of practice before heading to Cookeville for the Tennessee Tech Team Camp on June 13-15.
“I was a little disappointed with our freshman turnout,” Smith said. “We didn’t have a big number of county players to show up, and that concerns me. Most of the kids who tried out came from the middle school, which has a solid program. But we have to build this program with the help of the county players as well.”
When discussing his plans for building the high school basketball program, Smith said, “I really want to get more kids involved throughout the county. I would like to work with all county coaches and do what I can to help in any way. Those players are our future and we have to make sure they get down all the basics when they’re in the elementary leagues.”
