11-12 Cal Ripken: Tigers hold on to top A’s; Cards roll
The Outdoor Shop Tigers posted three crucial runs in the top of the sixth inning Monday night, and held on to withstand a rally as they topped the Woodlee’s Auto Body A’s 14-11 at the Dottie West Field.
Mitchell Page connected for a homer and led the way for the Tigers with three hits and four runs scored, as they improved to 2-4 in the 11- and 12-year-old Cal Ripken League. The A’s dropped to 2-5 on the season.
Scoring four runs in each of the first two innings to take an early lead, the Tigers also got three hits from McCain Smock, while Cameron Moore had two hits to help his cause on the pitcher’s mound.
Moore worked the first two innings, giving up three runs on four hits while striking out one batter. Page came on in the third, closing out the game with nine hits and three walks, while fanning three batters.
Mac Britton doubled and tripled, while Michael Gallagher and Spencer Pryor had a single each to round out the Tigers’ offense.
The A’s got four hits from Brett Mullican, including a double, while Aaron Taylor had three hits, as did Derek Brumley, who doubled twice. Cody Parkhurst, Blake Carter and Cole Rust had a base hit each.
Taylor took the loss, working all six innings. He gave up 12 hits and surrendered six walks, but fanned eight batters.
Nunley surrendered just two walks, and gave up a double to Ryne Fults, but struck out nine men on his way to the victory.
At the plate, Tyler Glenn went 4-for-4 with a double and a triple for the Cards, while Micah McColloch had two hits. Cody Forth, Nunley, Joel Rowland and Tylan Martin had a hit apiece.
Dustin Rhea took the loss for the Royals, giving up eight runs (seven earned) over four innings on seven hits and two walks. He struck out seven. Mitchell McCorkle worked an inning of one-run relief, while Fults allowed two runs and a hit over two innings’ work.
