Volleyball falls at Siegel, wins at Grundy County

Warren County’s McKenna Rhea puts up a bump set during a recent Lady Pioneer volleyball match.
The Lady Pioneer volleyball team dropped to 6-8 on the season and 1-5 is district play after falling to Siegel on the road Tuesday 25-10, 25-3, 25-13.

The Lady Pioneers played a solid first game, and at one point had pulled within three at 14-11. But the Lady Stars pounded the ball from every angle of the court. Middle blocker Destini Reedy continued to give Warren County solid net play, as did McKenna Rhea and Alysa Lankford.

In the second game Warren County made a few changes in its lineup, and the Lady Stars quickly disposed of the Lady Pioneers.

In the final game of the night Warren County played much better and kept the match close.

The Lady Pioneers pulled within one at 14-13 and a few mental mistakes gave Siegel all the edge it needed to take the match.

“Tonight we saw a very talented team,” said coach Franklin Fisher. “Siegel is young, but they have some very good athletes and I’m still a little shell-shocked from the way we played the second game.

“We played pretty well in the first and third games. A few mistakes cost us, but the girls played well. The second game we had no blocking and just fell apart.”

• On Saturday, Warren County defeated Grundy County on the road in two matches.

WCHS won the first match 26-24, 21-25, 25-9 and the second match 25-20, 25-23.

“We had a lot of girls who played very well today,” Fisher said. “Grundy is a solid team led by a senior middle hitter, Tiffany Long, and we did a good job of shutting the net down.”

Mary Kate Fisher and Brittany Frazier combined for 27 assists on the day, while Lankford had a big day with 21 kills and four blocks. The Pioneers did a stellar job from the service line with Ashley Malone picking up 30 points on the day.
