WCHS falls to Riverdale in District 7-AAA action
In volleyball, experience and size will usually make a winning combination.

Tuesday night in the Charlie Dalton gym, that’s exactly what happened when the Lady Warriors of Riverdale defeated the Lady Pioneers in three games, 25-11, 25-13, 25-16.

Riverdale’s outside hitters took control early in the first game as the Lady Warriors racked up nine kill points. Warren County’s McKenna Rhea played solid at the net, collecting two kills and one block, but errors gave Riverdale the win.

In the second game, serving was the Lady Warriors’ strong point with seven straight points for an early 7-0 lead. Poor passing and unforced errors proved fatal for Warren County as Riverdale took control, winning the second game.

In the third and final game, Warren County jumped out early holding a 5-2 lead thanks to the net play of Alysa Lankford. But the Lady Warriors answered with three kills and two service aces, taking the lead at 6-5.

Warren County took back the lead thanks to two Riverdale errors at 8-7. The lead exchanged hands two more times before the Lady Warriors ran off 10 points, jumping out to a 20-9 lead.

Warren County caught Riverdale sleeping when Destini Reedy had two big blocks in the middle and Mary Kate Fisher added an ace from the service line, but it was too little and too late as Riverdale served out the next two points.

“We didn’t play very well at all,” said coach Franklin Fisher. “We were standing around waiting for Riverdale to make the play. We were always on the defensive and not taking control on offense when we had the opportunity. Riverdale is a very good team and you can’t let a team of this caliber get the jump on you.

“Reedy was a bright spot for us tonight, filling in for one of our starters. She made several big plays at the net and did a good job at blocking. We have to cut down on our passing errors and be more consistent in the backcourt.”

Warren County was scheduled to take on Cookeville on Thursday, and will be on the road again Saturday at Grundy County.
