WC soccer shuts out McGavock
The Lady Pioneer soccer team improved their record to 3-3 Thursday afternoon with a 4-0 road victory over the Lady Raiders of McGavock High School.
Rain fell during the first half, creating visibility problems for both teams. Warren County struggled in the opening minutes of play as rain kept the Lady Pioneers from getting into any type of rhythm.
It was just over 32 minutes into the game when Warren County scored its first goal.
Working her way past two defenders, Shea Hyatt found the back of the net to give Warren County a 1-0 lead by the end of the first half.
With the field conditions still wet, Warren County came out in the second half more aggressive. Alex Mullican put Warren County up 2-0 when she scored from her wing position after the ball ricocheted off a McGavock defender and through the hands of the Lady Raider keeper.
McGavock had little offensive production in the half and never really made any attempt at scoring. Hillary Templeton drove to the goal from her mid-field position with 20-minutes left in the game to put Warren County on top 3-0.
The Lady Pioneer defense continued to play a solid game as goalie Erin Wolford touched the ball just one time in the half. Warren County was called for a penalty, giving McGavock a direct free kick but Wolford made the save.
With nine minutes left in the game Catherine Hill scored giving Warren County a 4-0 lead as the Lady Pioneers held on for the shutout.
“In the first few minutes of the first half the rain played a major factor,” said coach Keith Hamilton. “It was raining so hard that players on both teams were standing around and not getting to the ball. We really needed a bad weather game. The more we get into our season the more bad weather we have so this was a good experience for us.
“Tonight our midfielders got into the action and scored. Three of our goals came from midfielders and that’s what we have been working on for the past three weeks.
Everybody did a great job and the girls are continuing to play very hard.”
