MCC crowns champs
Mark Hitchcock, Jamie Stinson, Wayne Grissom and Carl Stanley came away with the top prizes in their respective flights at the recent McMinnville Country Club Championships.
After a qualifying round, players in the event were placed into four flights, and hit the links in eight-man, match-play tournaments to determine this year’s champions.
Hitchcock downed Bill Locke 2 and 1 to win the championship flight, after taking victories over Steve Biles and Allen Hitchcock on the way to the finals. Locke downed Brent Brock in the opening round, and bested Zack Molloy in the semifinals.
In the first flight, Stinson took home the title with a 6 and 5 win over Bill Rogers. The eventual flight champion opened his run to the title with a win over Greg Brock, and downed Brian Womack 4 and 3 in the semis. Rogers downed Mike Hitchcock in the semis, after topping Bill Rogers in the opening round.
Grissom’s 5 and 4 victory over Earl Hines in the championship of the second flight came after a 3 and 2 win over Dwayne Brown in the semis. The champion defeated Bobby Taylor 1 up in the opening round. Hines beat Stan Martin 1 up to reach the finals, after downing Whit Taylor in the first round.
In the third flight, Stanley edged Jerry Cathey 1 up in the finals. Stanley opened his bracket run with a 4 and 3 win over Mark Gibson, and downed Alan Lynn 1 up in 19 holes in the semis. Cathey beat Jim Pettigrew in the opening round and topped Hunter Sain in the semifinals.
