Wrestling’s most memorable weddings
On “Raw” his week, it looked like we were going to get a new storyline wedding that could happen in real life.
As you know, Matt was on one knee with the diamond, asking Lita to marry him, when Kane appeared on the TitanTron and revealed to the world that Lita’s unborn child was his.
Pro wrestling uses the wedding as a plot about every two years, with the WWE having had six great ones.
No. 6: “Butcher” Paul Vachon.
In 1984, “Butcher” and his bride “Ophelia” were ready to tie the knot in a flower-decorated wrestling ring. George “The Animal” Steele was the best man, and a midget was the ring bearer. Just after the “I-do’s,” Classy Freddie Blassy nailed the ring bearer with his cane. An all-out brawl broke loose, that ended with a food fight. Vince yelled, “They’re slamming the groom,” and they were.
No. 5: Billy and Chuck.
Just last year, the WWE led us to believe that they were going to have a same-sex marriage. The media gave the WWE a very-much-needed publicity shot, and the “Today” show gave them a gravy boat from The Pottery Barn.
But before the angle would end with the ceremony, Billy and Chuck said it was merely a publicity stunt. Rico, their assistant, was then sent to “Raw.” The end result didn’t sit well with gay fans, and they were very vocal about it during Billy and Chuck’s matches in the weeks after the called-off wedding.
No. 4: Triple H and Stephanie McMahon.
Renewing your vows is still a wedding.
Stephanie and Triple H were having big-time problems when Stephanie told Hunter she was pregnant. Hunter was all set to announce his love for her when Linda McMahon revealed to HHH over the phone that Steph had lied.
The Game went off big time, dumping her right in the ring. The princess screamed and the WWE dubbed in the voice of a roaring lion for those screams in the promos that followed.
No. 3: Uncle Elmer.
In 1985, the obese hillbilly was married in the ring wearing blue overalls and a white shirt. The bride would have been much better off had she done the same.
When they kissed, announcer Jesse Ventura delivered one of the best one-liners of all time, saying “it looks like two carp on the Mississippi river going after the same piece of corn.”
No. 2: Test and Stephanie McMahon.
Because Test had helped Steve Austin, he was allowed to date Vince’s only daughter.
She was absolutely happy, too, and the two became so close that Test asked for her hand a few weeks later. She said yes, and the wedding was set to be on “Raw.”
Just before Steph could finish her vows, Triple H arrived and revealed that he had drugged her on her bridal shower night in Las Vegas, got married at Shotgun Pete’s, and consummated the marriage countless times.
The end result was that Steph dumped Test and joined sides with The Game. Hunter and Steph would soon date and marry in real life, while Test went on to date Stacy Keibler.
Speaking of Stacy, she must hold the record for the longest pregnancy of all time. When the WCW went out of business, she was pregnant with David Flair’s baby — in the storyline, of course.
No. 1: Randy Savage and Elizabeth.
Randy Savage and Elizabeth Hulette were already married in real life, but the storyline had him treating Elizabeth badly. Fans wanted her to dump her man, but Macho Man got her to say “I do” at the 1991 SummerSlam. The Macho Man did his “Oh Yeahhhh” when asked “Do you…”
The biggest surprise came when Jake “The Snake” Roberts gave Miss Elizabeth a live cobra as a wedding gift.
