Self-defense skills a top priority for today’s kids

We live in a caring society, for the most part. However, the problem with that statement is “for the most part.”

While most people are by and large good folks, there are always criminals waiting to prey on the innocence of children. For whatever reasons, this problem seems extremely pronounced the last few years with a high-profile child abduction case taking place in Sarasota, Fla., about 10 days ago.

The kidnapping and murder of 11-year-old Carlie Brucia made national headlines because: 1) it was a ruthless crime, and 2) because the abduction was caught on video camera. The footage showed how it only took a matter of seconds for a complete stranger to walk up and apprehend a beautiful, young girl.

This crime as much as anything shows the need for today’s children to be equipped with the basics of self-defense. And such a class is currently being offered by Gary Steele Karate Studio called Stranger Danger.

It’s a great concept and Gary Steele should receive credit for offering such a course. The class teaches a variety of safety techniques to enable children to momentarily break free from an attacker and kick, claw and scream their way to safety if necessary.

More than almost anything in this world, parents want their children to be safe. It’s a terrifying thought to think our children could be picked up and murdered as they walk back home.

That’s why every little bit of information, every bit of training a child can absorb, could one day save their life. It’s unfortunate we always must brace for the worst-case scenarios, but you never know what could help your child make a split-second decision that could mean the difference between life and death.
