Many Americans are making a commitment to remain active and healthy into old age. Most senior adults know that physical activity is important for a healthy mind and body, although many are hesitant to jump right in on their own.
The Civic Center weight room saw a significant increase in users during 2003 and the momentum is expected to continue into the new year. The weight room, offering up-to-date equipment for a full body work out, is available Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sunday from 1 to 5 p.m.

Several individuals are taking advantage of the climate-controlled area at the mall for walking exercise while others, who prefer the great outdoors, are walking outside the Civic Center or at the new greenway that runs parallel with Barren Fork River.
Walking is not just a way to get from one place to another any more. Experts say it’s also an easy way to live a longer, healthier life, an efficient way to lose weight and a low-stress way to reach performance level fitness. A few walks a week can make a difference in the way you feel and how healthy you are. Even couch potatoes can be tempted to work a walking schedule into their lives. The only investment is a comfortable pair of walking shoes – there’s no membership dues or expensive training equipment necessary.
Remember to start every walk with a few minutes of easy strolling warm up to help loosen and warm your muscles and reduce the chance of injury. Finish with some simple stretches to keep your body flexible and ready for your next day’s effort.
