WCHS softball squad wins 1-0 over White County

SPARTA — The WCHS softball team picked up its third win of the season Thursday, defeating White County 1-0 in District 7-AAA action.

The Lady Pioneers’ only run which proved to be the game-winner, came in the top of the first.

Crystal Jones was hit by a pitch and then stole second to put her in scoring position. Cassie McGinness smacked a base hit to center field advancing Jones to third, and White County made an error on the throw back to the infield, allowing Jones to score.

Warren County put two on base in the second, but were unable to score the runners. The Warriorettes picked up hits in both the second and third innings, and threatened to get on the board in the fourth, when they loaded the bases with one out. But Lady Pioneer pitcher Erica Warren stuck out the next batter, then forced a ground ball to second to get out of the inning.

In the top of the fifth the Lady Pioneers got back-to-back hits from Brittany Patterson and Jasmine Ware, but once again left the runners on base. White County went down swinging in the fifth and put one on in the sixth, but were unable to push the runner across the plate as Warren County came away with the district win.

Warren held White County to eight hits with three walks, and WCHS had only two errors in the game. Warren County picked up seven hits and left seven runners on base.

For the Lady Pioneers Patterson, Ware, Jones, McGinness and Warren all went 1-for-3, while Vanessa Cornelius was 2-3.

The (3-4) Lady Pioneers travel to Lebanon for a doubleheader Tuesday, and host Franklin County Saturday for a twin bill, the first-ever games played at the team’s new on-campus field.
