Broncos best White County Warriors
Boyd’s soccer team out-gunned visiting White County Thursday in a tough, physical contest, and improved to 3-1 on the season with a 3-1 win.
Although the Broncos took just 10 shots in the game, they made them count, beginning when Clint Patterson scored off a Casey Hertwig assist 20 minutes into the first half to give his squad an early 1-0 lead.
The Warriors answered Patterson’s goal immediately, however, when Jack Merrill got the better of Boyd goalkeeper Jay Medley for a breakaway score.
Medley slammed the lid shut on his goal after that, however, and finished with a whopping 27 saves to help his team pick up the win.
With the score tied 1-1 in the closing minutes of the half, White County was whistled for interference in front of its own goal. Boyd’s Arne Alberts fired a penalty kick past the Warrior goalkeeper to give his team a 2-1 advantage, and Eric Phillips scored from the left side to send the teams into halftime with the Broncos on top 3-1.
Although the Warriors turned up their offensive pressure and the physical play on both sides intensified through the second half, Boyd used its solid defense to keep the Warriors at bay and hold on for the victory.
“This was a very physical game, but they kept their cool and played really well,” said Boyd coach Keri Hertwig. “The defense did a great job, and Jay was excellent. He made some awesome saves.”
The Broncos play host to Mt. Juliet Christian Tuesday afternoon at 4:30, and travel to Benton Hall Saturday for a 1 p.m. contest.
