What do Thomas Edison and four Morrison Elementary fourth-graders have in common? They all have creative minds which have led them to invent.

While the students, Callie Orrick, Miki Rogers, Haley Teeters and Charlie Krickel, have a way to go before reaching the ranks of Mr. Edison, they started their journey as inventors by participating in the 10th annual regional Inventors Convention last week at MTSU.

The Invention Convention was created by the university’s Department of Elementary and Special Education to “serve as a creativity inspired showcase for the region’s fourth- through sixth-graders.” It is sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

Morrison Elementary fourth-grade teacher Diana Winfree said she encourages her students to enter the Invention Convention contest every year. “I think it’s very good for them,” she said. “These particular students are very creative and this gives them another opportunity to excel.”

Students have the option to enter their inventions in one of two categories: a “games” division and a “way to make life easier” division. To advance to regional competition, the local students first had to submit a picture and a description of their inventions to be judged. Only the best ideas from across the Midstate were chosen to go to MTSU.

Orrick, Rogers and Teeter collaborated to enter the games division and submitted “The Flag Game.” In this game, one must correctly answer American geography questions, such as naming state capitals, to advance on the flag-painted board to the winning spot.

For their efforts, the girls captured second place. They received a trophy, certificates and other prizes.

Krickel made his way to regional competition by submitting an idea in the way to make life easier category. His invention was a shoe-cleaning device which brushes dirt and rocks from the soles of shoes. For his efforts he received a certificate and prizes.
