Weight training available

Beginning Monday, April 8, all current eighth-grade boys in Warren County Middle and other county schools who are interested in playing football for the freshman team in the fall are invited to attend weightlifting sessions at the high school.

The sessions will begin at 3:15 p.m., and continue until 4:30 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Pioneer head coach Gerald Tidwell said he hopes to have a large group of players come out for the workout sessions, which are all voluntary and not a requirement to play on the freshman squad next year.

“I just want to give them a chance to not only keep in shape, but to keep them excited about the upcoming season,” he said. “Hopefully we’ll get a good group of kids to come out for this program, and build up some more numbers for next year’s freshman team.”

Students will be transported to WCHS by bus from their school, and parents will need to make arrangements for their sons to be picked up at 4:30 p.m.

Tidwell, members of the football staff and current varsity players will provide instruction the first three days on proper lifting techniques and general weight room safety. Freshman head coach Wayne Warner will oversee the lifting program, which will run through Friday, May 10.

The program will be designed to improve overall football strength and quickness, as well as improve coordination and movement skills.

Also, eighth-graders will have a spring practice session for football beginning Monday, May 13 and concluding Friday, May 24. More information concerning spring practice will be given at a later time.

Anyone with questions or concerns should feel free to contact coach Tidwell at 473-5558 or 668-5905.
