WCMS clipped by Avery Trace
Warren County Middle School’s soccer team suffered its first loss Monday, falling to Avery Trace 3-2 at Pistole Park.
Avery Trace scored mid-way through the first half on a breakaway run with the ball just missing goalkeeper Tucker Chastain.
The Pioneers turned up the offensive pressure and fired six shots at goal, and with six minutes left in the half WCMS was awarded a penalty kick and forward Cody Cowens line the ball up and drove it past the Avery Trace goalie to tie the game at 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half WCMS started with the offensive pressure they used in the first half. The Pioneers kept the ball on offense and took shot after shot at goal. After four minutes of play Tony Girabaldi of WCMS put a shot just past the outstretched arms of the Avery Trace goalie to put WCMS up 2-1.
The Pioneers let their guard down just a bit, however, and let Avery Trace tie the game with 10 minutes left to play. Avery Trace put pressure on the WCMS defense and fired several shots at Chastain, who had 10 saves in the game. With five minutes left Avery Trace put its offense into motion and fired the game-winning shot just over the out-stretched arms of Chastain.
With time still left on the clock WCMS went into an aggressive offensive set and had several chances to tie the game. Luis Holquin fired a shot that just skipped across the top bar for WCMS. With one minute left in the game WCMS had one last chance to tie the game but the shot went wide left.
“Spring break really hurt us, we just didn’t have our minds in the game tonight,” said WCMS coach Matt Jackson. “We played well at times, and then we just let our guard down on defense.”
Warren County’s record is now 5-1. The team will play Barfield April 4 at Murfreesboro.
