WCHS splits with Jets in home tennis action

Warren County High School’s tennis team took on Cumberland County at the McMinnville Civic Center complex Thursday, splitting its match with the Jets.

The Pioneer boys fell short, losing 7-2, but the Lady Pioneers picked up their first win of the season, 5-3.

For the Lady Pioneers, Tina Vucic beat Katie Ramsey 8-2, Mo Zwemer lost to Monica Bertram 4-8, Kristen Sharp won 9-8 over Whitney Ivey, Kristin Rampp defeated Diana Darling 8-1, Mary Beth Gribble won over Emily Volk 8-3 and Julia Fisher won her match over Sandy Smith 8-0.

In doubles play Warren County’s team of Gribble and Nichole Rhea lost to Ramsey and Burton 0-8, and Emily Hobbs and April Kirby fell to Cumberland County’s Volk and Smith 5-8.

For the boys, Warren County’s Doug Roberts lost to William Taylor 4-8, R. J. Pierce lost to Sam Valier 3-8, Tyler Boyd fell to Josh Harris 5-8, Jacob Wilson lost to Rick Martin 5-8, Travis Brown defeated Derric Williams 8-6 and Terry Tilton lost to Travis Deck 3-8.

In doubles play Jay Koelbl and Nathan Maxwell fell to Warren Xehl and Walker Xehl 2-8, Ross Marlowe and Cameron Gonder lost to Jason Bow and Dale Ernst 5-8 and Pierce and Chris Marlowe defeated Jeremy Hassler and Ben Daughest 9-8.

Both the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers are now 1-1, with their next match set for March 28 at Cookeville.
