Watertown too tough for Broncos

The Boyd Lady Broncos played their first home game Thursday against Watertown, falling 14-4 in five innings.

Amber Hodge hit the mound for the Lady Broncos and gave up two runs off four hits in the first inning. Boyd struck back in the bottom of the inning with a RBI hit from Dara Webb to make it a 2-1 game.

In the second Watertown put three more runs on the board, but Boyd scored its second run of the game on an error to make it 5-2. Then with runners on second and third, Abbye Barnes drove a single up the middle to drive in two runs and cut Boyd’s deficit to 5-4 going into the third.

Watertown opened the game up in the third with four runs, taking a 7-4 lead. Boyd struggled from the plate over the next two innings, going three up and three down, while Watertown added four more runs in the fourth and three in the fifth.

Boyd committed several costly errors in the fourth and fifth and Watertown took advantage when they had runners in scoring position. Watertown finished with 14 runs off 14 hits while the Lady Broncos scored their four runs on just four hits. Holly Ferrell and Barnes were 1-for-3, with Webb and Mary Reynolds each going 1-for-2 for the Lady Broncos.

“The third inning took us out of the game today, we had too many mistakes back to back which kept the inning alive for Watertown,” said coach Heather Campbell. “Our pitching is starting to come around, but we still have a little work getting our arm strength built up.”

The Lady Broncos will take this week off, then return to action March 25 for a road game at Mt. Juliet Christian.
