Social Security checks in the mail – just two days late
For hundreds of Warren County residents who receive Supplemental Security Income from the Social Security Administration, the checks were in the mail. They were just two days late.
Concern circulated last week when hundreds of checks, normally delivered the first day of every month, didn’t arrive at McMinnville’s post office as scheduled. Post office and Social Security officials estimate between 200 and 300 checks were nowhere to be found.
“We don’t know exactly what happened,” said post office spokesman Charles Bogle. “They arrived in Friday’s mail bundled up so we feel like they were mislabeled.
“In my 35 years here, I’ve never had those checks arrive two days late. They have been one day late before, but never two days.”
The checks were delivered as soon as they arrived, ending two days of concern for blind, disabled and otherwise needy Warren County residents.
“These people are the poorest of the poor,” said Social Security official Maylene Whitefield, who said the local office issued new checks to anyone who stopped by Thursday.
The unexpected delay put some residents in a financial pinch, although a short-lived one.
“Obviously some folks were upset but most people were understanding,” said Bogle.
