Lady Eagles start strong in win over Lady Wildcats

A huge first half helped propel Morrison’s girls to a third-place finish in the county elementary tournament Monday night.

Facing Dibrell in the girls’ consolation game, the Lady Eagles held their opponents without a point in the first quarter, and limited the Lady Wildcats to just one field goal through the first half on the way to a 32-17 victory.

Brooke Bowman came out on fire for Morrison, scoring 10 of her team-high 12 points in the first quarter as the Lady Eagles took a 13-0 lead by the period’s end.

Chelsea Bunn broke Dibrell’s scoring drought with a free throw midway through the second quarter, and Brittany Honeycutt scored with just over a minute to play in the half, but the Lady Eagles scored on baskets from Jasmine Hall and Melita Pelham to carry a 17-3 lead into intermission.

The second half was an even match, with Morrison out-scoring the Lady Wildcats 9-8 in the third quarter and both teams posting six points in the fourth. But the Lady Eagles’ early start proved to be the difference-maker, as Dibrell never challenged the Morrison lead.

Bowman finished with 12 points, while Kayley Murray and Hall each had five. Pelham scored four, Chelsea Lawson and Kelsey Nowlin added two each, and LaNae Bess and Lindsay Farley each chipped in a free throw for Morrison’s winning effort.

Dibrell was led by Virginia Prater’s six points, with Kayla Bond adding four. Bunn had three, while Honeycutt and Jessica Davis scored two each.
