Obituary Report for February 8, 2004
McMinnville resident and Knox County native Melbourn Davis Overton Sr., 76, died Feb. 6.
The owner/operator of Valley Feeds, a director of the Chamber of Commerce and vice president of Caney Fork & Western Railroad, he was a member of Noon Rotary and was honored as the first recipient of the Distinguished Citizen Award. He was a member and deacon with McMinnville First Baptist Church.
The son of the late Otis Howard and Margaret McCampbell Overton; he was preceded in death by sisters, Sallie Jo Kirby and Betsy Ann Tucker.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Shanks Overton; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah Jane (Debbie) and Charlie Smartt of Viola; son and daughter-in-law, Melbourn Davis and Nan Overton Jr. of Brentwood; grandchildren, Byron Smartt of McMinnville, Jamie Smartt Parker of Taylor, S.C., John Smartt of Viola, Taylor and Jackson Overton of Brentwood; great-grandson, Jackob Parker of Taylor, S.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and Elbert Marguerat of Knoxville; sister-in-law, Doris Shanks of Knoxville; brothers-in-law, John Shanks of New Orleans, La., and Jimmy Tucker of Salisbury, N.C.; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at McMinnville First Baptist Church with Rev. Fred Bueto, Rev. Al Marguerat and Rev. Carroll Owens officiating. Burial will follow at Mt. View Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. today and 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Monday at High’s. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church Mission Fund.

Frank Byars, 85
McMinnville resident and Warren County native Frank Byars, 85, died Feb. 7 at NHC Healthcare after a lingering illness.
A retired nurse with Alvin C. York Medical Center and a member of the Church of Christ, he served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II.
The son of Harold Herd and Hassie Glenn Byars, he is survived by his wife, Imogene Byars; son, Dwight Byars of McMinnville; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and sister, Cleo McBride of McMinnville.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at High’s Chapel with burial following at Smyrna Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be administered by VFW Post 5064 and American Legion Post 173. Visitation will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at High’s.

Jim D. Elrod, 96
McMinnville resident and Warren County native James Douglas Elrod, 96, died Feb. 5 at NHC Healthcare after an extended illness.
A retired Genesco employee and a member of East End Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Charley and Bertha Watson Elrod; and was preceded in death by his wife, Myrtle Opal Bogle Elrod in 1986; and sons, Eugene and Sammy Elrod.
He is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Tom Mason of McMinnville; son and daughter-in-law, Doug and Gail Elrod of Rock Island; daughters-in-law, Carolyn Elrod of McMinnville and Carolyn Rothemel of Florida; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brothers, Sam Elrod and Johnnie Elrod, both of McMinnville; sisters, Willie Davenport and Pearl St. John, both of McMinnville, and Bonnie Jarrell of Scottsboro, Ala.; several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at High’s Chapel with James Boyd and Doris Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at Gardens of Memory. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until time of service today at High’s.

Glenn R. Foster, 64
Woodbury resident and Cannon County native Glenn R. Foster, 64, died Feb. 4 at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after a short illness.
Retired from AVCO after 37 years of service and a member of Woodbury Church of Christ, he was the son of the late Shelah and Geneva Parton Foster; and was preceded in death by sister, Wanda Hollandsworth.
He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Judy Hoover Foster; sons and daughters-in-law, Tony and Sherrie Foster of McMinnville, Jason and Robin Foster of Manchester; daughter and son-in-law, Lori and Tim McIntosh of McMinnville; grandchildren, Nicholas Williams and Emma McIntosh; brothers and sisters-in-law, Doris and Jennie Foster, Kenneth and June Foster, Paul and Louise Foster, all of Woodbury; sisters and brothers-in-law, Margie and Jack West, Mary Lynn and Dale Bush, all of Woodbury; and mother-in-law, Dean Hoover of Woodbury.
Services were held Saturday at Woodbury Funeral Home with Herb Alsup officiating. Burial followed at Riverside Gardens. Memorial donations may be made to Woodbury Church of Christ building fund or the Aplastic Anemia MOS International Foundation.
