Military Notes: Kerr completes basic training
Marine Corps Pvt. Eric M. Kerr, son of Christina L. Kerr and James L. Kerr of Spencer, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.
Kerr successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally.
He and fellow recruits began their training at 5 a.m. by running three miles and performing calisthenics. In addition, they spent numerous hours in classroom and field assignments. They operated as a small infantry unit during field training.
He and fellow recruits ended the training with The Crucible, a 54-hour team effort, problem-solving evolution which culminated with an emotional ceremony in which the recruits were presented the Marine Corps Emblem and were addressed as Marines for the first time.
Kerr is a 2002 graduate of Van Buren County High School.
Jason Elwell completes Navy course
Navy Seaman Apprentice Jason A. Elwell, son of Tammy J. Elwell, recently completed the Navy’s basic storekeeper course.
During the course at the Naval Technical Training Center, Meridan, Miss., students learn to work in the Navy’s supply field. The course of study includes typing and the procurement, receipt, inventory, storage, issue and shipping of equipment, parts and supplies.
Elwell joined the Navy in June, 2001.
Reagan deployed to Kandahar
Army Pvt. Andrew N. Reagan has deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan, to support the mission of Operation Enduring Freedom.
Enduring Freedom is the official name given to the biggest U.S. military mobilization since the Gulf War in 1991. Members of all branches of the U.S. armed forces have been deployed and reserve components activated to support the war against global terrorism, combating the international terrorist network or regime forces outside of the United States.
Reagan is an infantryman regularly assigned to the Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 505th parachute Infantry Regiment at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, N.C.
He is the son of Kay Reagan of Viola and Paul Reagan of McMinnville.
The private is a 2000 graduate of Warren County High School
Wallace receives Army ROTC scholarship
Samual R. Wallace has received a four-year Army ROTC scholarship to attend Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Va.
The mission of ROTC is to provide future officers with leadership qualities needed in the regular Army and the reserve components.
The cadet will study military science, management development and experience adventure training while pursuing a bachelor’s degree.
After graduation, the cadet will be required to serve in the military for eight years.
The obligation can be fulfilled by serving either on active duty and/or in the Army National Guard or Reserve.
Wallace will be studying military science management development and experiencing adventure training while pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering.
He is the son of David R. Wallace and is a 2002 graduate of Warren County High School.
Glover graduates from basic training
Air Force Airman Aaron C. Glover has graduated from basic military training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Tex.
During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force Mission, organization and military customs and courtesies; performed drill and ceremony marches and received physical training, rifle marksmanship, field training exercises and special training in human relations.
In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.
He is the son of Loraine Glover and Dannie Glover.
Soldiers honor Captain Cunningham
Captain Norman Cunningham will turn over command of the local National Guard unit next month after over four years at the helm of Iron Troop. Captain Cunningham has been a successful commander for the local troop leading it to excel in all its undertakings.
During his command, he has received the Army Commendation Medal and been honored with the Order of Saint George Medallion for his leadership in the Armor and Calvary field. Iron Troop also received a Governor’s Distinguished Unit Citation for its outstanding training during 2001.
The 119 soldiers of the local unit honored Captain Cunningham during the December meeting with a framed unit guidon as a remembrance of his command. He will transfer to Cookeville to continue his career and assume new duties as the squadron intelligence officer.
Herrin completes Marine Corps basic training
Private First Class Jeremy Herrin recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.
He is the son of Ben and Brenda Herrin of DeKalb County and Fran Craighead of Warren County. He is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Herrin; and Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Stewart of White County. Herrin is a 2002 graduate of Warren County High School.
He successfully completed 12 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both mentally and physically. He received instruction on the Marine Corp’s Core values of honor, courage and commitment. As a Marine, these core values will be a guide for both professional and personal conduct.
He completed a rigorous physical conditioning program and spent numerous hours learning first aid, uniform regulations, combat water survival, marksmanship, hand-to-hand combat and assorted weapons training, either in the classroom or through field training. The recruits performed and operated as a small infantry unit during field training. Recruits were presented with the Marine Corps emblem, The Eagle, Globe and Anchor and were addressed as Marines for the first time.
