24-run day leads to two wins: Pioneers rout Wilson Central, Macon Co.
Warren County’s bats sprang to life with a pair of big wins in the Wilson County Invitational tournament Thursday.
The Pioneers combined for 12 hits to slap a 13-1 loss on Wilson Central, then traveled a few miles down the road to Lebanon to defeat Macon County 11-2.
With the wins, Warren County improved to 2-1 and moved on to the weekend’s elimination portion of the tournament.
After going up 1-0 on Wilson County on a Matt Brown run in the first, the Pioneers batted around in the second, scoring six more runs on five hits.
The Pioneers erupted for four more runs in the fourth and two in the fifth, ending the game via the mercy rule.
Wilson Central only managed one hit in the game, and scored its lone run in the fourth inning.
Nicholas Robinson was untouchable on the mound, working the first four innings to earn the win. Robinson didn’t give up a hit, struck out two batters, walked three and hit another. Colby Jenkins worked the fifth, giving up one hit and one walk.
At the plate, Jake Mitchell went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs, while Brown scored twice on a 2-for-3 day. Glenn Rogers was 2-for-4, while Derek Kennamer, Zach Pelham, Daniel Owens, Scott Dunham and Nathan Cantrell had a hit apiece.
The Pioneers got started early in their win over Macon County, scoring two runs in the first, beginning with a towering Rogers home run to right. Mitchell followed with a walk, and scored to give WCHS a 2-0 lead which swelled to 7-0 with five runs on five hits and a walk in the second inning.
Cantrell walked and scored in the third, and the Pioneers added three more runs on three hits in the fourth to account for the final winning margin.
Mitchell finished 2-for-3 with three runs and a pair of RBIs, while Rogers drove in two runs and scored two more while going 2-for-4. Kennamer was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Brown, Pelham, Tyler Herriman and Joey Haston had the Pioneers’ other hits.
Landon Boren worked the game’s first two innings, giving up one hit and balancing a strikeout against a walk, to earn his first varsity win. Haston came on in the third, giving up just two hits while striking out two.
The Pioneers travel to Coffee County for a 7 p.m. start Monday night, then begin their District 7-AAA title defense with a Tuesday night game at Lebanon.
